How to backup to CD with Windows XP?

These instructions only apply to computers with Windows XP operating system.  If you do not have Windows XP, you must consult with your computer manufacturer for directions on how to use the included 3rd party CD-Burning software to backup files to CD.

  • Open My Computer (if it is not located on your Desktop, then it is on your start menu).
  • Open Local Disk C.

  • Open Winner folder.

  • Right-click your user ID folder, and select Properties.  Your user ID folder will have the same name as what you type in to start the software.

  • Each CD will store approx. 700 MB of data.  Locate the "Size" description on the folder properties window.  In the example shown below, the size is 17.6 MB.  If the size is 700 MB or less, you can fit the entire folder onto one CD.  If the size is more than 700 MB, you will have to manually select specific groups of files within your user ID folder to backup to each CD; this will not be covered in this FAQ.  If the size says GB next to the number then it will not fit on one CD, 1 GB = 1000 MB.  Close the folder properties window.

  • If the size is 700 MB or less, right-click your user ID folder, and select Send To, then select CD-RW Drive (or DVD-RW Drive).

  • You will see a file copy progress indicator on the screen.  At this time, Windows is preparing a copy of your files for burning to CD.  This may take anywhere from a few seconds to 15 minutes.

  • Once the progress indicator is no longer displayed, you should see a message at the bottom-right corner of the screen saying “You have files waiting to be written to CD.  To see the files now, click this balloon.”  Click the balloon area to open the CD-Writing folder.

  • A new window will appear showing you whichever files or folders you selected in step 6.  Select File, then select Write these files to CD.

  • A new window will appear titled “Welcome to the CD Writing Wizard”, and you will be prompted to enter a name for the new CD.  Optionally you may change the name, however the current date is used by default which is usually a good description to use.  Click Next.

  • Windows will begin to burn the files or folders to the CD.  During this time you should not use your computer.  Some programs may take up resources which may halt or abort the CD burning process and ruin the blank CD.
  • Once the CD burning process is complete, a message will appear alerting you that it has finished, and the CD will eject automatically.  Click Finish and close any open windows.

*This feature works with Windows XP operating system.
