What are the differences between Bluetooth wireless technology and Wi-Fi are complementary
technologies that do different things: Bluetooth
wireless technology is designed to replace serial and USB cables between
laptops, and other computing and communication devices (i.e. steno
writers) within a 10-meter range. In other words, you may use a
Bluetooth device to replace the serial cable between your steno writer and
computer (CAT software). External Bluetooth adapters are
readily available at consumer electronic stores. You will need two
Bluetooth adapters to establish communications between two devices.
Bluetooth adapters are ideal for low-powered devices (i.e. cell phones,
steno writers, etc.)
Wi-Fi is wireless Ethernet. It provides an extension or replacement of wired networks for dozens of computing devices. Wired networks (Ethernet) are used for sharing devices (printers, hard drives, etc.) among users. A Wi-Fi is the wireless version of an Ethernet network. Wi-Fi networking offers a much faster data transfer rate (as much as 100 times faster) than a Bluetooth connection. A location offering Wi-Fi is commonly referred to as a hot-spot. You may use a Wi-Fi networking to communicate with multiple attorney workstations. A Wi-Fi network requires wireless Ethernet adapters (i.e. 802.1a, 802.1b, etc.) and a wireless router. Additionally, Wi-Fi networking requires certain skills to properly configure the router (Wi-Fi box) and nodes (i.e. attorney workstations).
