Encoder Extras
A few things to try:
1) Get a DSL Line filter and put it on your modem line. Even if you don't
have DSL, it will be worth it. You may be getting RFI (Radio Frequency
Interference) on your phone line that's causing your modem to behave
erratically.
2) If your station has an EEG or Evertz encoder, set your baud rate down to
1200, even if their encoder is set to 2400. A little-known fact about
encoders is that some of them use UART (Universal Asynchronous
Receive/Transmit) buffers and some do not. Anything that does use one can
handle slower modem connections than what they are configured for. EEG's and
Evertz's use UART buffers, so they will accept a connection at any baud rate
that their modem supports and they will work. The lower the baud rate, the less
static will interfere in the connection. Besides, you can only get 720 baud
into closed captioning on standard definition video, anyway.
This does NOT go for LINK and Ultech encoders. On those, you have
to match the speed. - Except for the newest LINK encoders. They have
addressed their modem issues.
3) If you're working with an EEG encoder, parity and word length don't
matter. They ignore the parity bit and drop the most-significant bit from 8
bit data feeds. Evertz's require you to get the word length right, but you
can have the parity wrong and the encoder will still work, just flashing
"Parity Error" on its status display, which may get the station
calling you.
Default encoder settings:
EEG: 1200 baud, 7 data bits, Odd parity, 1 stop bit
- But you can ignore parity and it's OK if data bits are 8
Evertz: 2400 baud, 8 data bits, No
parity, 1 stop bit
- But you can connect at 1200 baud and it will work and be less sensitive to
static interference.
- It's EASY to change from the front panel on these encoders, so many
stations do.
LINK: 1200 baud, 8 data bits, No
parity, 1 stop bit
- You MUST match speeds, data bits, and parity.
- The modem will answer at 2400 baud, but the encoder won't listen to it, so
be SURE you have your speed set down to 1200 baud.
- Baud can be changed with front-panel switches on this model, but its speed
is displayed on the front-panel status display. Call and ask.
Ultech: Walk away. Don't look back.
